Bed Stuy Fly clothing and accessories

A vintage barber chair and a couple of decorative beach-cruiser bikes greet visitors at the door to this handsome streetwear store, with polished-wood floors and tin ceilings. Owner S. King used to run a barber-shop chain called Planet Cuts, where he also sold clothes in the back. He retains a neighborhood feel at his latest retail endeavor, where he works with local designers like Black Tags and Sabit NYC to offer a beautiful selection of colorful checkered and plaid button-downs for both men and women, a limited but tasteful range of PF-Flyers high-tops and some great logo tees, including one that bears the store’s own logo.

Fritzl's Lunch Box restaurants

Casual, narrow luncheonette in Bushwick. The subdued colors are accented by red plastic chairs reminiscent of grade school, a high bookshelf lined with cookbooks, and a hanging hornet’s nest in the window. Don’t be misled by the name; Dan’s grandfather, Fritz, was a Swiss restaurateur, but Fritzl’s menu is mostly American, save for some Mexican-influenced snacks, like the baja shrimp cocktail tostada, salsa-brined chicken wings, and blood sausage tamale. Skip the fried chicken-sandwich and opt instead for his prized burger, a salty mix of beef cheek and chuck meat. Beyond the sandwiches, Fritzl’s menu offers simple pastas, including tasty ricotta dumplings topped with flavorful shredded peekytoe crab. The pork ribs, though nicely seasoned, are more bone than meat.

Montana's Trail House food and beverage

A taste of country living has taken root in deep Brooklyn. Opened in June, Montana’s Trail House recreates a sliver of the backwoods in a former auto repair shop. Hitch your bike to the front rail of this homey cabin on a triangular lot. The walls of the oddly shaped, intimate rooms are clad in salvaged barn wood and decorated with kitschy pieces of Americana, including old axes, sports pennants and a faded Colonial-era flag. Vegan alert: There is real taxidermy on the wall.
